How to convert DPI to pixels

Multiply the DPI by the number of inches: pixels = DPI × inches. 300 DPI across 6 inches is 1800 pixels. The same 300 DPI across 20 inches is 6000 pixels — the DPI has not changed, only the area it covers.

To go the other way, divide: DPI = pixels ÷ inches. That is how you find out what density an existing file will actually print at.

DPI, PPI and pixels per inch

Converting pixels per inch to DPI needs no arithmetic — they are the same number expressed for a different device. A file tagged 300 PPI sent to a printer asking for 300 DPI is already correct.

What does differ is the printer’s own dot resolution. An inkjet advertised at 2400 DPI is describing ink droplets, not image pixels, and still wants a 300 PPI file.

How many pixels is a 24 × 36 poster at 150 DPI?

3,600 × 5,400 pixels. At 300 DPI it would be 7,200 × 10,800 — four times the file for a print read from across a room, which is why 150 is the usual choice at this size.

Should I send a 2400 DPI printer a 2400 PPI file?

No. 2400 DPI describes the printer's ink droplets, several of which build one image pixel. A 300 PPI file is what it wants; 2400 PPI would be sixty-four times the data for no visible gain.

How many pixels is 300 DPI?

300 DPI is 300 pixels for every inch of the finished print. Across 4 inches that is 1200 pixels; across 10 inches it is 3000.

Does higher DPI mean more pixels?

Only if the physical size stays the same. Doubling the DPI at a fixed print size doubles the pixels needed; halving the print size at a fixed pixel count doubles the DPI you get.
