Converting a resolution that is not listed

The list below covers the resolutions people look up most, but any pixel count converts the same way: inches = pixels ÷ PPI. 810 pixels is 8.4375 inches at the 96 PPI screen standard and 2.7 inches at 300 DPI. 840 pixels is 8.75 and 2.8. A 1,600 × 1,600 square is 16.667 inches across on screen and 5.333 inches printed. To convert 1,200 × 300 pixels to inches, the same division gives 12.5 × 3.125 at 96 PPI.

Small counts often land on round numbers, which is a useful sanity check. 192 × 192 is exactly 2 × 2 inches at 96 PPI, because 192 is twice 96. 170 × 170 is 1.7708 inches — not round, and there is no reason it should be. A pixel count is only ever a whole number by coincidence once you divide it.

Two dimensions also carry a shape, and the shape survives the conversion. 2,048 × 1,152 reduces to 16:9, the same proportion as 1,920 × 1,080 and 3,840 × 2,160, so all three print and display as the same rectangle at different sizes. The density you divide by is the whole answer. 96 PPI is the CSS reference rather than a measurement of your monitor, so a figure worked out at 96 tells you how large something will be in a browser, not on the glass in front of you. How these conversions are worked out

Every page in this index applies the same relationship: inches = pixels ÷ PPI in one direction and pixels = inches × PPI in the other. The only variable is the pixel density, which is why each page lists the answer at 72, 96, 150, 300 and 600 DPI rather than giving a single figure.

Use 96 PPI for screen and CSS work, 150 DPI for posters and drafts, and 300 DPI for anything printed and held in the hand.
